How Retainers Keep Your Smile Straight
Retainers are custom-made orthodontic devices that fit snugly over your teeth (or behind your teeth for permanent retainers) to maintain your smile’s new, aligned position.
Retainers are needed because your teeth aren’t quite settled into their new positions after braces or aligners. The surrounding bone, gums, and muscles need time to adjust and stabilize. Daily activities like chewing can exert pressure on your teeth, causing them to shift. Retainers counteract this movement, keeping your teeth beautifully aligned.
Consistent wear is key to your retainers’ effectiveness! We recommend you wear them for 20-22 hours daily for the first three months after you complete braces or clear aligner treatment. After that, and depending on your orthodontic case, you will be able to switch to wearing them only at night.
