Most patients who wear their retainers nightly find that a single set of retainers lasts 1 to 3 years with proper care. Retainers that are frequently left out, exposed to heat, or not cleaned regularly tend to warp or crack sooner.
Common reasons for needing a replacement: the retainer is lost, it cracks or warps, it no longer fits correctly due to minor tooth movement, or it’s simply worn out from regular use.
